When we speak of Amsterdam, the first thing that comes to most minds is that this is where certain drugs are legalized! Although true, there is much more to this Dutch city. Here is a list of exciting activities in Amsterdam.
1.Bike ride
Renting a bike from one of the numerous bike shops in the city is one of the best and most affordable ways to see the compact town of Amsterdam.
There are about 600,000 to 1,000,000 bikes in the town, and you will find them chained to the numerous bridges that go over the canals. Avoid irking the locals and stick to the bike lane.
2. Red light district tour
Take a guided walking tour through one of the most sparkling and talked-about areas in Amsterdam, which legally houses commercial sex workers.
On your walk there, your guide will take yours through several alleys and walkways that reveal brothels, theatres, coffeehouses, gay bars, sex shops, and women standing behind store windows to conduct business.
3. Museums
Marvel at the strokes of Van Gogh’s masterpieces, or get transported back in time in the Anne Frank House as Anne’s story during WWII unfolds through her diary, the museums in Amsterdam have a lot to offer.
Ensure you take into account the time you will spend waiting in the serpentine queues to enter the museums or check their websites online to buy tickets beforehand.
4. Vondelpark
All that walking and cycling is bound to make you want to plonk yourself somewhere comfortable. Head to Vondel Park to read a book, listen to music, or merely watch passersby.
Enjoy the scenery at the park and take in the fresh air to feel as rejuvenated as ever.
5. Canal ride
Enjoy a different view of the city by taking a canal ride with one of the three top canal tour operators. Also known as the Venice of the North, Amsterdam has over 100 km of canals and 1,500 bridges.
6. Markets
One of the most famous markets and the last floating one in Amsterdam is the flower market, Bloemenmarkt. You will be amazed at the sheer variety of colors and may even be tempted to pick up some of the great tulip bulbs.
If flowers are not your thing, the Albert Cuyp market in De Pijp for groceries or Waterlooplein flea market are other options.
7. Begijnhof
This former convent is a small cluster of historic buildings with a manicured garden and exudes peace and tranquility. You can marvel at the architecture while you take a relaxing walk.
Also located here is the Begijnhof Kapel, a secret chapel where the Beguines prayed.
8. Coffee houses
The coffee houses in Amsterdam are known less for their coffee and more for their cannabis products. You can walk into any of the 200 shops spread around the city, but exercise caution and discretion if you plan to try some of the items.
